Contrary to Popular Opinion: A Blog
Dear Devoted Dancers,
I want you to know that I am trying my hardest to avoid alliteration. Update on the sound system: we've purchased a new mixer with the funds we've been able to fundraise so far. It had it's debut at last night's dance and we are so pleased to finally be able to project the wonderful sounds of our musicians from the speakers again! This was the most imperative improvement for the system but we have other needs that we are hoping to address as well: more microphone stands, and some cabling and accessories to generalize. As such, raffle ticket sales are still very important as we continue to raise funds to get our sound system in top working order. We are planning on participating in the Rt. 11 Yard Crawl on August 13. I'm still waiting to hear back from the place we used last year but if you or someone you know lives on Rt. 11 north of Harrisonburg and would be willing to let us use part of the front yard for our yard sale, please send us an email at [email protected] or talk to Reilly at a dance. We're also looking for some volunteers for the yard sale, either help setting up on the evening of August 12 or for a couple hour shift on August 13. Let us know if you're interested! The survey is still on! Please take a couple minutes to give us some feedback about your thoughts and experiences with our local dances. The link to the survey can be found here and on the Shenandoah Valley Contra Dance and Monday Night Facebook groups. You only need to complete the survey once and your response is invaluable! Thanks for your help with this! Check out our new website at shenandoahvalleycontradance.weebly.com. The purpose of this website is for it to be a resource for information about our dances and our non-profit organization. Newsletters and some photography will be posted there as well. Finally, the first Dayton Dance is just around the corner! We'll be dancing the night away to music by Go Figure on Saturday, September 10. Mark your calendar! We are so glad you're part of this dance community and love seeing you at the dances! SVCD Committee Read the rest of the August 2016 newsletter here. Don't forget to subscribe!

Dear Dancers,
Clearly I'm setting a trend for late newsletters and being sick. Somehow I managed to catch a nasty virus and then bronchitis. I stepped up my game from last month by sending this email on the 4th and being sick for over two weeks with much more than a cold! The obsession with contra dancing is real though because my main goal has, of course, been to get well but to be well enough to contra dance. As you may have noticed, Monday Night has on occasion this summer used Dayton Learning Center for their dance. Monday Night is still looking for a new place to dance as the availability of Massanetta Springs is spotty over the summer. We're hoping to find a more permanent place closer to downtown Harrisonburg and with a wooden floor that we could use on Monday nights. If you know of a place, please contact Eleanor or Kelly or send us an email. Monday Night dances will continue throughout the summer, location TBD (check contracorners.com for updated information about dance locations). Ok, here's the part where we really need you read and not skim. The SVCD committee is looking into ways to improve our dances, increase attendance, and enhance the contra community. We have created a short survey that we would love to get your input on. The link to the survey can be found here and on the Dayton and Monday Night Facebook groups. You only need to complete the survey once and your response is invaluable! I estimate that the survey should take about 10 to 15 minutes - not too long. Stay tuned for information about yard sale and the start of the Dayton Dance 2016-2017 season! See you on the dance floor! SVCD Committee Read the rest of the July 2016 newsletter here. Hello contra dancers! Sorry this newsletter is a little later than usual. I think I've spent more time in my car over the past month than I've actually been home - an introvert's nightmare! Beware, I'm also battling a bit of a cold so I cannot promise to be entertaining; my humor tends to get even more dry and subtle if I try to be funny when I'm sick. Thank you to those who have sent us leads of places to dance! Monday Night is still looking for a new place to dance as Massanetta Springs will be unavailable to us starting mid- to late-June. If you know of a location, preferably closer to downtown Harrisonburg and with a wooden floor, that we could use on Monday nights, contact Eleanor or Kelly or send us an email. Monday Night dances will continue throughout the summer, location TBD (check contracorners.com for updated information about dance locations). As we continue to celebrate Dayton's 20th Anniversary Year, don't forget about the 50-50 Raffle ($1 tickets). Also remember we are looking for people to share their dance memories with us for a most special project to be revealed at the December Dayton Dance. We have a couple really interesting stories so far, but ve vant more! Also, perhaps you have photos of past dances? Yes, you know you do. We'd love to borrow a copy for this Top Secret (not really) project. Contact us for more information for either (or both!) of these activities. See you in the air conditioned dance halls, ha! Raffle tickets! Get your raffle tickets! If you were at the last Dayton dance, you know how temperamental our sound system is. It's no wonder because it is more than 20 years old! We really need your help in raising funds to support the purchase of a newer sound system. Right now, all dance admissions are used to just cover the costs of the dance, which is why we are fund raising with the 50-50 Raffle. Buy a ticket or two yourself, or help us by selling the tickets to others you know! Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased at any Dayton or Harrisonburg dance. Increase your odds and purchase tickets with a group of friends! May 7 is the Belmont Yard Sale. We will GLADLY take donations of items to sell at the yard sale (read: we'll do all the hard work for you!) to raise funds to support Dayton Contra. Bring items to a dance in April or contact us to arrange a time to donate your items. Now, if you're my kind of crazy and feel like sharing part of your Saturday with some like-minded contra folk, we will gladly accept your help on May 7 during the sale. Contact Ruth at a dance to sign-up for a volunteer shift. May 14 is the last Dayton dance until September 10, 2016. We look forward to seeing you again before the summer! Monday Night is continuing to look for a new place to dance as Massanetta Springs will be unavailable to us starting mid- to late-June. If you know of a location, preferably closer to downtown Harrisonburg and with a wooden floor, that we could use on Monday nights, contact Eleanor or send us anemail. Monday Night dances will continue throughout the summer, location TBD (check contracorners.com for updated information about dance locations). And, I think that's all, folks. We appreciate your continued support of the Shenandoah Valley Contra Dances. You're so much fun to dance with and we are so proud of this friendly-city dance community. Ya'll are awesome.
