Shenandoah Valley Contra DanceSVCD is a non-profit organization in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and member of the Country Dance and Song Society. At SVCD, we believe in fostering community and mental and physical health through dance, specifically contra dancing. Contra dancing is a form of dancing that is often described as the best of square dancing and swing dancing combined. You get to do-si-do and allemand, as well as swing ballroom style. If you can walk, you can contra! Contra dancing is thought to be descended from English Country dancing which was then modified by the French into the contredanse, or literally "opposites dance". This term could come from the fact that you often dance opposite your partner, or that couples progress in opposite directions during a dance. Contra dancers celebrate diversity and are always looking to spread the contra-love to others. Dances are family friendly and all are welcome. Come with friends, come by yourself, but no partner is necessary. Most dancers change partners at the end of each dance which is a fun way to casually meet new people. Our events are mask-optional. There are no vaccination requirements. As always, for the health and safety of the community, please stay home if you are displaying any symptoms of illness or have been recently exposed to someone who tested positive for an infectious disease. |
"I can't tell you how much this group has meant to me. Much love to you all!" - A. |
